La Muralla is an informal group of young producers in one of Huila’s southernmost municipalities, San Agustín.
This is the youngest group of producers with whom Osito (our exporter) has partnered with as on average most are in their mid to late 20’s. With that youth comes the energy and passion for producing high-end specialty coffee.
We don’t usually offer community lots but this one was very impressive. It is remarkable to see young coffee farmers really excelling. If we would not say their age your guess would be as good as ours that these coffees come from veteran producers. The future is bright for this region of Huila. If this is what they are producing at such a young age we can only expect incredible quality from this area in San Agustin for a very long time to come. We look forward to keeping on buying coffees from them in the future.
Osito started working in San Agustín long before they even had a legal company and some of the first producers they met here are still part of the core of their work there today. Kyle one of Osito’s founders has this to say about this area “ San Agustín is special because first, it is steeped in history. It is well-known for its pre-Columbian history with several significant archaeological sites including the archaeological park which is a UNESCO world heritage site. As such, San Agustín has a very unique vibe relative to the rest of Huila. Lots of tourists bring money and with money comes culture (food, music, dancing, etc). Couple these cultural nuances with some of the best growing conditions in Huila as well as the culture of high-end production amongst farmers and it’s easy to understand why it’s so unique and truthfully, one of my favorite places in all of Colombia. Moreover, it has some really unreal landscapes and geographical features that give it this romance that I don’t see anywhere else in Huila. It’s such a cool place.”
San Agustin is in the southernmost part of Huila. Not only is it one of the best coffee-producing areas of Huila it is very well known for its Pre-Colombian archeological sites belonging to the ancient San Agustin culture. Its beginnings go back to the fourth millennium B.C. Several hundred large monolithic sculptures are found here.
We sourced this lot in partnership with Osito coffee. We highly value Osito’s way of making long-term relationships with the farmers. This gives us trust that we are purchasing not only incredible coffees but that they are directly helping the farmer earn a living with respect and dignity for their hard work. Osito’s bond with growers is rooted in their shared understanding of what goes into growing coffee. Their experience growing coffee in Colombia allows them to facilitate real relationships between roasters and growers across the globe.
